With Hamilton’s landscape and backstory so firmly rooted in the surrounding mountainside, Mount Hope by Cachet wanted to reflect that through its architectural designs. With this community-defining perspective, a mix of modern and rustic influences came together to create what can be expressed as chalet-style—or Mountain Modern—design.
“Context is important when developing a new community,” says Stephen Hunt, Principal of Hunt Design Associates, who took a unique approach to the design of Mount Hope by Cachet. “Communities require an identity and a sense of place, which is best achieved when you reference the local character, features and history of the surrounding area.”
The perspective is organic, textured, and rustic
The influence of modern and low-maintenance materials is evident in both the Mountain Modern and Contemporary home designs in the Mount Hope by Cachet community. Points of reference also include the Niagara Escarpment with its age-old forest ecosystem. “It made perfect sense to develop an architectural style that referenced organic materials and textures, and maximized natural light and views,” Hunt says.
Central to this concept is the variety of textures and patterns, achieved with glass, metal, stone and simulated wood.
Massive triangular chalet-style windows and a large front door both speak volumes, without overwhelming the aesthetic of these homes. Corner windows offer panoramic views, and the rustic stone cladding and columns balance the dark metal-seamed roof in a way that suggests they were made for each other. Contemporary, natural colours lend warm undertones that pull the modern design together.
“The strong horizontal lines created by lower porch and garage roof canopies accentuate the other elements to create distinctive and dynamic architecture,” Hunt says.
The mountain magic continues inside
Inside, the simple elegance extends comfortably and invitingly. The open concept main floor is full of light and ample living space, grounded by hardwood flooring and an oak staircase. The thoughtful, contemporary design weaves through a modern kitchen and subtle colour palettes add both depth and richness.
This beautifully designed master-planned community makes mountain-style life a very stylish reality. “We set out to establish an identity for this community that will give residents a sense of place and belonging,” Hunt says. Mission accomplished.
